SteamOS has real potential to shake up that paradigm. To this point, the big sticking point for game devs/publishers has been the fragmentary nature of the Linux market-a massive number of distros each with a tiny user base. That includes ~99% of phones & tablets (~74%/26% android/iOS), consoles from Sony, Nintendo, & Valve, chromebooks, pretty much all “smart home” devices, etc.Īt this point, windows is drifting on inertia, and a lot of the factors that made it the obvious home/gaming PC OS are no longer relevant, particularly with so much of the software people use either being widely available on *nix already, or shifting to an OS agnostic SAAS model. That said, Microsoft’s OS is past its “best by” date-other than Microsoft’s game consoles, mainstream desktops and laptops, and a minority of the servers that support them, literally everything runs on some Linux/Unix variant.
